Picture Smart tests AI description on demand

A JAWS user moves focus to an unlabeled image, presses the assigned command, and JAWS sends that image to an AI vision model for analysis, then reads the generated description aloud, as Tdx.Umsystem documents. The feature exists for the gaps other people left behind: scanned PDFs, legacy intranet pages, sites where alt text was never written, that sort of thing.

It’s a workaround for bad authoring, not a replacement for good authoring. Charts, dense infographics, and text baked into images still trip it up.

How WCAG and Section 508 govern JAWS compliance

Section 508  frames the obligation as compatibility with the category of assistive technology tools.

Two success criteria do most of the work when JAWS is in the room. WCAG’s 1.1.1 Non-text Content requires images to carry a text alternative, which is what JAWS reads aloud when that alt text exists. Success Criterion 4.1.2 (Name, Role, Value, the WCAG 4.1 compatible criterion) governs whether JAWS can tell a user that a button is a button, or that a field is required. When the underlying markup is right, JAWS exposes it correctly, and when it’s wrong, no amount of screen reader sophistication fixes what the code never said.

Does an organization need to make its website ADA compliant? 

For most organizational websites, yes: the ADA’s web guidance applies to businesses, government agencies, and nonprofits that serve the public online, and the Department of Justice treats an inaccessible website the same as an inaccessible physical location.

What does ADA compliance require? 

The content itself has to be perceivable and operable through assistive technology, covering what ADA compliance requires in practice, not that the organization owns a copy of JAWS or any other screen reader.

Where JAWS still wins against free alternatives

JAWS keeps a real edge in a narrow set of environments. Complex financial trading platforms, SAP and Citrix virtual desktops, and legacy Java applications built before accessibility was a design requirement still favor JAWS, according to Vispero’s own compatibility documentation. These are systems built and patched over decades, often with screen reader support bolted on late. Confirm current behavior against Vispero’s published compatibility lists and community reports before assuming an older limitation still exists, since vendors patch these integrations without much fanfare. Assume some of these limitations have already been patched and verify them before relying on them.

Everywhere outside that narrow list, NVDA has caught up. Its add-on ecosystem and NV Access’s release pace now cover web browsing, Office, and everyday productivity tasks about as well as JAWS does. Browsing a modern website, drafting a document, running a video call… NVDA handles all of it competently. The advantage that used to justify a JAWS purchase on general principle has mostly disappeared, leaving only a handful of specific cases.

Compare screen readers against your staff’s real-life software stack. Running mostly cloud tools and browsers, NVDA may be fully sufficient; running a 15-year-old Java-based case management system, JAWS may be the only option.

Inventory the applications people use every day before comparing screen readers in the abstract. That list settles the decision faster than any feature chart. Application compatibility is what separates these two now.

JAWS runs on Windows only, with no macOS or Linux version anywhere on Vispero’s roadmap. VoiceOver ships free inside every Mac and iPhone, and TalkBack does the same for Android. JAWS’s absence there is a boundary, since it was built for Windows desktops running enterprise software.

Braille is where JAWS does something speech alone can’t. Connected to a refreshable braille display, it gives deafblind users, and plenty of sighted-but-hard-of-hearing users who simply prefer tactile reading, a way to work through a spreadsheet or a block of code. Windows 11’s 22H2 update and later gave it more natural-sounding voices and better browser handling, enough that a light or occasional user can now get through email and basic browsing without installing anything else. Power users doing scripted, table-heavy, forms-driven daily work still tend to outgrow it fast. For everyone else, it’s a genuinely reasonable place to start.

Deployment hinges on specs and how you license seats

JAWS runs on Windows 10 or 11 and needs a current build of .NET, a few gigabytes of free disk space, and enough RAM to keep pace with whatever else is open, according to Freedom Scientific’s published requirements. It works cleanly with Office 365, Teams, and the major browsers. All of it runs on standard business hardware.

IT teams choose between three ways to authorize it:

  • A physical USB key that travels with a user
  • Software-based authorization tied to a specific machine
  • A network license that a shared lab pulls from a pool

Universities, employers, and nonprofits buying in volume typically negotiate per-seat pricing, run a trial period first, and get training resources bundled into the deal.

Only active service agreements keep JAWS current

Vispero ships a major version yearly with incremental updates between releases, and only customers with an active SMA contract receive them automatically. Lapsed licenses stop getting updates, full stop.

Recurring troubleshooting threads point to specific friction, not random bugs. A Windows feature update lands and JAWS misbehaves until a patch catches up. A remote desktop session sometimes clashes with it too. Vispero’s support channels and knowledge base are the first stop for resolving either.

Matching the tool to the mandate closes the decision

Checking whether a site is accessible means combining both approaches: automated scanners like a free accessibility checker flag missing labels and contrast failures, but only running JAWS or NVDA through a real login or checkout flow shows what actually breaks for a user.
